In the high-stakes world of airline collective bargaining, the expertise and experience of those at the negotiating table are not just assets; they are necessities. We find ourselves now in a challenging position. The company has fortified its negotiating team with two top-tier attorneys from JonesDay, a leading management-side law firm in the Railway Labor Act (RLA) arena, and the renowned labor consultant, Jerry Glass. This power-packed lineup is a clear signal: the company is prepared, leaving nothing to chance in the bargaining process.
This situation brings us to a crucial question: Are we, as a union, equally prepared to face such formidable opponents?
Currently, our representation lacks a crucial element – a seasoned RLA attorney and professional negotiators. The importance of this cannot be overstated. RLA negotiations are not just about labor laws; they are a unique blend of legal intricacies, strategic communications, and intricate knowledge of the aviation industry. Without a dedicated expert in RLA negotiations, we are, in essence, bringing a knife to a gunfight.
Think about it – our current lead negotiator, though well-intentioned, does not possess specialized RLA negotiating experience. And while our union president is undoubtedly committed to our cause, can one individual truly juggle the roles of a president and lead negotiator effectively? The depth and breadth of knowledge required to excel in these distinct areas are vastly different.
The history of labor negotiations in the aviation industry is filled with examples where having an experienced RLA attorney and professional negotiators made a significant difference. They bring to the table not just their expertise in law but also their experience in high-pressure negotiation scenarios. They understand the tactics and strategies of management-side attorneys and consultants like JonesDay and Jerry Glass. This understanding is crucial in devising counterstrategies, anticipating moves, and crafting proposals that can lead to more favorable outcomes for pilots.
Our situation is not just a bargaining challenge; it's a stark reminder of the disparity in negotiation power. We cannot afford to be outgunned and outmatched. The stakes are too high – our work conditions, our pay, our benefits, and, ultimately, our livelihoods and the safety of those we transport.
As we move forward, let's make a collective decision to strengthen our negotiation team. It's time to level the playing field by bringing in experienced RLA attorneys and professional negotiators onboard to work under our guidance to get us the contracat we deserve. Only then can we confidently say that we are truly prepared to secure the best possible contract for us, the dedicated pilots of Allegiant Air.
Together, let's make this critical change for the future of our credibility, our contract, and our careers.
